Changing Habits Starts Here: A Simple Pathway to Follow

March 21, 20262 min read

Most people know what they “should” be doing.
Eat better. Move more. Sleep earlier. Drink less.

But knowing is not the same as doing.

Real change is not about willpower alone. It is about understanding your behaviour, your motivation, and what actually gets in the way. When you slow the process down and follow a simple pathway, change becomes more achievable.

Start with awareness.

What are you currently doing? When does it happen, and what do you get from it? Every behaviour serves a purpose, even the ones we want to change. It might offer comfort, relief, or routine. Understanding this without judgment is the first step.

Next, imagine the change.

If this habit shifted, what would your day look like? How would you feel physically and mentally? This step is important because it connects you to your future self. Change becomes easier when it feels meaningful, rather than forced.

Then comes a key turning point, what I call the crossroads.

You have two directions. Stay the same or change.
Staying the same is often easier in the short term, but what are the longer-term costs? On the other hand, change can feel uncomfortable at first, but what are the long-term benefits? Taking a moment to honestly weigh this up, helps you decide if you are truly ready.

From here, get realistic.

What usually gets in the way? Is it time, energy, emotions, or certain situations? Identifying these barriers is not failure; it is preparation. It allows you to plan more effectively.

Now, make it simple.

Choose one small step. Not a complete life overhaul. Just one action you can repeat. A helpful way to do this is: “When X happens, I will do Y.” The smaller and clearer the step, the more likely you are to follow through.

Finally, commit.

Why does this change matter to you right now? Not next month, not next year, but today. When your reason is clear, your actions are more consistent.

Change does not happen all at once. It happens through small, repeated steps.

You do not need to be perfect. You just need to begin.
